The first day dawned bright and sunny, a welcome change after a month of relentless rain across the state. At the very last moment, just before leaving, a brainwave struck me and I borrowed an Action Camera from my cousin Daniel. Not even too sure of what we were going to do with it, we decided to carry it anyway.
All set for our first adventure together, we downed a quick lunch at home and set out for the airport. On the way we actually got an idea of how badly the floods had affected the Aluva area. Houses and cars covered in mud lay all around, the owners wondering where to even start cleaning. Hundreds of ever growing garbage dumps lined the roads, rapidly filling up with mattresses, sofas, beds and an assortment of other home accessories.
Boarding was uneventful and soon we were airborne, soaring eastward in white out conditions. Half a movie and a snooze later, we landed at Chennai Airport. With a melee of taxi drivers vying for our attention, it was Uber that finally prevailed. Whilst the hotel we had booked was listed as being only 5 km from the airport, it turned out to be a little over 11 km away. A little disappointed at the incorrect information furnished online, we made our way to the location. It turned out to be a relatively clean hotel in a clean part of town. The staff were friendly and apologised for the distance fiasco, owing it to a Miles vs Kilometres misunderstanding with Booking.com. We quickly dropped our bags off and headed out for dinner to the nearby Dindigul Thalapakettu Restaurant suggested by Vineet and Deepti.
The mutton biriyani and fish tawa fry that they had recommended was ordered and failed to impress. A second dish of Chicken Thalapakettu had to be ordered to satisfy the raging demons of my tummy. A Zomato certified case of gluttony followed after which we beat a sloth like retreat to the hotel. Writing about the events of the day, we soon fell asleep, and slipped into dreams of anticipation for the morrow.
